Audiological Assessment Procedures

Children with hearing impairment are advised by medical specialists to undergo audiological evaluations. Following this recommendation, they attend the audiometry session at our centre, where they complete either a Behavior Observation Audiometry (BOA) test or a Play Audiometry test, depending on their age and developmental level.

1. Behavior Observation Test (BOA):

In this assessment, the child is seated with a parent. The examiner presents various types of sounds from behind the child (such as sounds from an audiometer, jingle bells, or a drum). At the same time, the examiner uses toys in front of the child to maintain their attention. The child’s behavioral responses to the sounds—such as eye movement, head turn, or changes in activity—are carefully observed. Based on these observations, an audiological report is prepared.

2. Play Audiometry:

This test is designed for older or more responsive children. The child is seated alone on a chair and is fitted with headphones. Various play materials are placed in front of them. The examiner begins by training the child using louder sounds; when the child hears a sound, they are instructed to perform a simple action—such as moving a toy from one place to another. After successful demonstration and practice, the child performs the task independently. Results from these responses are then used to prepare the final audiometry report.
